Emphasis: If you're new to Shoulderstand (Sarvangasana) or haven't practised it for a while try it this way using a wall to help you get in position. The set-up is important for the comfort of your neck so watch carefully first to ensure you've got it right, then push your feet into the wall to lift the hips and, maybe, one or even both legs. Shoulderstand strengthens the upper body, quietens the nervous system. massages the thyroid and parathyroid glands which stimulates the lymph system and stimulates blood flow. 

Props needed: Two blankets and some wall space.

Duration: 29 minutes

Emphasis: Lowering down to the ground from Downward Facing Dog into Cobra Pose and/or from Chaturanga to Upward Facing Dog in Sun Salutations is a challenge. You need good upper body strength to do both and without it the resulting 'collapse' can cause discomfort in the lower back. This tutorial uses a bolster to increase your awareness of your alignment and support you in this often tricky this transition. After the tutorial we do a short sequence using the bolster for support including Locust Pose (Salabhasana) and Thunderbolt Pose (Virasana) before resting in Savasana.

Props needed: A bolster or two pillows and a blanket plus two blocks or thick books.

Duration: 42 minutes

Emphasis: Dancer Pose is a challenging one. It requires you to do a strong backbend with open shoulders whilst standing on one leg. I cannot imagine a time when I will be able to do the full pose - arms over the head holding my foot! - but there are ways to practise and progress this pose to make it more comfortable and accessible. If you're curious to try this pose, join me for this tutorial where we'll prepare with Sun Salutations and poses that stretch the shoulders and front of hips and thighs, and progress the backbends before taking some different variations of Dancer's Pose. You can stop off at any variation that suits you best and please note that this is a pose that requires much practice - don't expect to just be able to do it straight away. As you'll see from the final variation I am far from being able to hold my foot but the strap enables me to do my best version that I can at this moment.

Props needed: A strap with a loop in it, a blanket, some wall space.

Emphasis:  This is the standard form of Sun Salutation that I offer in the majority of my classes. We're progressing to Plank Pose (Phalakasana) to Eight Limbed Pose (Ashtanga Namaskara) and in to Cobra Pose (Bhugangasana) to strengthen the body and create both physical and mental stamina.

Props needed: None.

Emphasis:  In this next in the series of tutorials on modifying Sun Salutation to suit your needs, we swap the traditional lowering down to the ground via Knees Chest Chin Pose, aka Eight Limbed Pose, (Ashtanga Namaskara) followed by Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) or 4 Limbed Staff Pose (Chaturanga Dandasana) followed by  Upward Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana) for a version that takes the weight off your wrists and onto your forearms, making it more accessible for those who have wrist and shoulder problems or just find the actions of lowering down too challenging. We then take Sphynx Pose (Salamba Bhujangasana) which is a gentler backbend than Cobra.

Props needed: Maybe a blanket to kneel on.

Emphasis:  In this variation of Surya Namaskar (the Sanskrit name for Sun Salutations), I show how you can progress to the next stage without having to lower down to the ground to take a backbend, or compromise your wrists and/or shoulders in Downward Facing Dog. Instead, we'll do Cat and Cow Pose and half variation of Downward Facing Dog that will help you keep the pressure off those tricky areas.

Props needed: A blanket to kneel on.

Emphasis:  In the next tutorial in this series on modifying Sun Salutations, we move to a standing variation that uses the chair for balance and support. This is a good option if you have knee issues that prevent you from kneeling on the floor, whilst still giving you all the different movements of a standard Sun Salutation. You'll be stretching and strengthening your body and increasing your mobility whilst honouring your limitations.

Props needed: A chair.

Emphasis:  In this tutorial we'll explore the very gentlest form of Sun Salutation, seated on a chair. Expect the same 'flow' of forward bends and backbends as a standard Sun Salutation but, if you have an injury or a health condition that limits you in some or all of the movements, this variation might be just the ticket for you to experience this sequence that moves all your major joints and muscles. 

Props needed: A chair.

Emphasis:  In this class you'll prepare your body for Gomukhasana Pose. You'll start with Gomukhasana Pose to see how it feels without the preparatory work, then stretch the arms and shoulders in Balasana (Child's Pose), a variation of Anahatasana (Puppy Dog Pose) and Upavistha Yoga Mudrasana (Seated Yoga Seal Pose). You'll then work on the legs in Sucirandhrasana (Eye of the Needle Pose) and some lovely supine twists followed by Ardha Gomukhasana variation (Half Cow Face Pose variation). You'll do a final shoulder opener before setting up for the full Gomukhasana Pose once more, paying attention to how it (hopefully!) feels more available and spacious after all the preparation.

Props needed: A strap and two blocks or thick books.

Mat direction: Long side of the mat facing the screen so you can see more easily whilst lying down.

Duration: 8 minutes

Emphasis:  Learn how to do Wild Thing (Camatkarasana). This deep backbend, although less challenging than Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), can be difficult if you have any shoulder or wrist problems so there are also two modifications to make it more of a possibility if needed. Emphasis:  A quick tutorial on this balancing pose - some tips and warm-up exercises that will help you wrap your arms and legs a little more easily and stay still and focussed like an eagle fixed on it's prey!

Props needed: None required but if balancing is proving too challenging then stand next to a wall to help steady yourself.

Emphasis:  Learn how to do this kneeling backbend (Sanskrit name Ustrasana) with good alignment so you don't hurt your back or neck.

Props needed: A blanket to kneel on, a bolster (or a pillow rolled in a blanket or towel - I'll show you how to do this).
